Lynchburg Retail Merchants Association Hosts 2014 Parade

The annual December Lynchburg Christmas & Holiday Parade in downtown Lynchburg is something anticipated by many each year. Some exciting news for 2014… the Lynchburg Retail Merchants Association serving the Lynchburg area since 1907, will be the host (again) of this event. As many of you know we made our first attempt in 2013 and the event was cancelled due to the first ice storm in years to take out the parade; but the Retail Merchants and the parade committee was determined to use the last few months to make this event bigger and better. We have many of the same participants back in the lineup with some wonderful new additions. Also, we have added the word “holiday” to the parade title to be more inclusive to the community (the parade was named back in 1954) we felt we needed to make the change since we were new to this event.

…I cannot wait to see the sights and sounds of all the hustle and bustle as the families gather to watch the parade just like old times. – Debra Fears Keeling, owner, ACCENTS Flags & Gifts (downtown merchant)

We hope you will plan on joining us in downtown Lynchburg as we celebrate this wonderful season with various businesses, clubs and organizations that proudly fill the parade route to delight the judges, locals and our many visitors.

Grand Marshall: Steve Bozeman

Steve Bozeman Master of CeremonyMr. Steve Bozeman’s military career started in 1966 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 19, Bozeman was sent to Vietnam acting as both a helicopter mechanic and a machine door gunner. For his service and courageous acts, Bozeman was awarded a variety of medals, including two Purple Hearts for combat wounds.  He was also decorated with 18 Air Medals, which distinguish those that have meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight.  Additionally, the Navy Commendation Medal was bestowed upon Bozeman, with the medal also holding a “V” for heroism and participation in combat operations.

Bozeman helped co-found a pair of organizations, the Marine Corps League Lynchburg Detachment, and the Military Order of Purple Heart Chapter. His weekly efforts at the “Support Our Troops” rally at Monument Terrace in downtown Lynchburg testify to his patriotism. Bozeman has organized the event more than 510 Fridays in a row since Nov. 30, 2001. Previously, he was named the Marine of the Year (1993) and the Vietnam Veteran of the Year (2000) for the state of Virginia. Mr. Bozeman and his family have lived in Lynchburg for 36 years.

The Retail Merchants Association is proud to have him serving as Grand Marshall for the Lynchburg Christmas Parade & Holiday Parade which falls on Pearl Harbor Day “The Day of Remembrance ”. We are grateful to have such a great American in our community.
